The association, with approximately 42 member companies, unanimously elected Barnes to help lead the organization's strategic direction and guide the implementation of its healthcare initiatives. Elected on July 1, Barnes, along with a vice chairman, will serve a year-long term with the EHRVA. The EHRVA, which is partnered with the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), represents the majority of installed EHR solutions in the U.S. and provides a leadership forum for the EHR community that is relative to standards development and harmonization as set by the Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP); EHR certification as set by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT®); interoperability and performance; and quality measures. The association also addresses other EHR issues that may become the subject of increased government, insurance and physician association interest. Barnes is currently responsible for managing marketing, strategy, corporate development and government affairs at Greenway Medical, a leading provider of integrated EHR, practice management and interoperability solutions. In the past three years, Barnes has formally addressed Congress and the President's administration on eight occasions on topics such as EHR and healthcare information technology (HIT) adoption, EHR certification, standards harmonization, interoperability, privacy and security, confidentiality and compliance, IT adoption incentives and the globalization of healthcare. He has also written and contributed content for trade journals, magazines and media outlets regarding topics focused on EHR and HIT adoption.
